چکیده

SL 2: Background 1 First of all, I’d like to touch on the background of this study. As you know well, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) representing polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans, PCBs, and organochlorine insecticides are lipophilic stable contaminants. They have been detected in a wide range of environmental media and biota, and have been of great concern on their toxic effect on humans and wildlife. In developed countries, comprehensive investigations on the POPs pollution have been documented well, and made clear that environmental residue levels have been decreasing in recent past decades. However, in developing countries, fewer information are available on the pollution of these contaminants, particularly dioxins and related compounds.

This article reviews the results of comprehensive investigations conducted in our laboratory, Center for Marine Environmental Studies (CMES), Ehime University over the past three decades on the distribution, sources, temporal trends and toxic impacts of the bioaccumulative persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the Asia-Pacific region with a particular emphasis on the developing countries. Recommendations for Evaluating Temporal Trends of Persistent Organic Pollutants in Breast Milk

BACKGROUND Biomonitoring data of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in breast milk are increasingly collected and available for quantitative analysis of levels and time trends. A common approach is to apply log-linear regression to calculate doubling and halving times of the POP concentrations based on the temporal trend observed in breast milk. However, there are different, sometimes conflic...

Persistent organochlorine residues in human breast milk from Hanoi and Hochiminh City, Vietnam: contamination, accumulation kinetics and risk assessment for infants.

Despite the ban on persistent organochlorines (OCs) in most of the developed nations, their usage continued until recently in many Asian developing countries including Vietnam, for agricultural purposes and vector-borne disease eradication programs. In this study, we collected human breast milk samples from the two big cities in Vietnam: Hanoi (n=42) and Hochiminh (n=44) and determined the conc...

Assessing infant exposure to persistent organic pollutants via dietary intake in Australia.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs); organochlorine pesticides (OCPs); and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) persist in the environment, bioaccumulate, and pose a risk of causing adverse human health effects. Typically, exposure assessments undertaken by modeling existing intake data underestimate the concentrations of these chemicals in infants....

Synthetic musk fragrances in human milk from the United States.

Synthetic musk compounds are used as additives in many consumer products, including perfumes, deodorants, and detergents. Earlier studies have reported the occurrence of synthetic musks in environmental and wildlife samples collected in the United States. In this study, human breast milk samples collected from Massachusetts, were analyzed for the determination of concentrations of synthetic mus...
